THIS WEEK’S PERSON OF FAITH: ROBERT CARDINAL SARAH

I recently became aware of Robert Cardinal Sarah because I bought a book written by him. The book is called The Power of Silence: Against the Dictatorship of Noise. I find the topic interesting because I feel like my life is filled with voices and noise (self-inflicted) as I am a habitual tv-watcher, music-listener, video-watcher, etc. Lately I have realized that I need to actually budget some time to think, pray, and reflect in silence. I am planning to empty out my walk-in closet and create a quiet space there. Hubby is willing (reluctantly at first) to share his closet with me. Have you heard of Robert Cardinal Sarah? He has very strong opinions on how to promote the belief in the Eucharist as the true body and blood of Jesus Christ. He also believes we should receive the Eucharist while kneeling and on the tongue. He espouses a return to a more sacred, reverent attitude toward our church, worship, and the Eucharist. Some people think he's radical, wrong, and is impeding the Catholic Church's progress into the 21st century. Some people agree with him. One thing is for sure, there are very few people who know about him and espouse a middle ground. Whatever people think of him, he is one of the 214 cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church (115 of which are designated as electors - eligible to vote for a future pope). Things I should have learned in Catholic school (but didn't)

These are in no particular order. I'm just listing them as they come to mind. 1. The sacredness of the Holy Mass and the scriptural basis for Transubstantiation.  Basically, we should have attended daily Mass in school as was the practice when my father's generation was in Catholic school. By the time I started Catholic school in the early 70's, we attended Mass once a week. I'm not complaining. Weekly Mass was wonderful. I'm grateful that I was able to attend weekly Mass with my fellow students. It was important to me then and is even more so now. Catholic schooling impressed that on my heart. But we should have attended daily Mass. The Mass and the Eucharist in the Mass is the sole source and summit of the Catholic faith. By the time I got to high school, Mass was optional.
